About Poppin’s Plants

OUT OF PASSION . For the love of beauty

Everybody remembers their first date with an Acer. Mine was in the middle of August, 20 or so years ago, in a newly rented accomodation, there it was, in a pot, as part of a garden the size of a handkerchief. It was miserable, un-loved, a poor excuse of a weeping twig, as dry as a drum, leafless and despite the obvious lack of care, it was quite dramatic. The challenge was to try and rescue it, see it through fall and winter and wait for the spring magic to reveal a beautiful Garnet, if it would live.

We moved, and took it with us. It was theft, but since my husband had brought it back to life, we comforted ourselves in that it was a rightful robbery. We had revived it, won it, and deserved to keep it. It followed us, from one garden to the other until it was time to plant it in the soil for definite… and give it some acer and conifer friends.

More than 50 different cultivars were then acquired along with some amazing and astonishing soon to be established firs. Looking after a third of an acre was then a full time job, with the obvious, trimming, cutting back, check for diseases, understanding sun exposure, effects of wind and cold spells, plant combinations, yellow-book and village-open gardens tea&cake and so on.

The Passion was inevitable and after many happy years of living together, wanting more was made frustrating as space became quite a limiting factor.

Again it was time to upsize, leaving all our favorite maple trees and conifers behind. We were lucky enough to find a property that would match the one of my childhood, a meadow with nothing planted but suffolk hedges and grass. In my father’s footsteps I set out to plant Cedars, piceas and pines in addition to Japanes Maples.

This garden, my arboretum, connects me with nature and brings me peace (and work), offers beauty and inspiration, feeds my soul and spirit, grounds my feet and pulls me irresistibly to the outdoors. Daily it recharges my batteries, deeply and joyfully, when I stroll from one tree to the other, stroking, nurturing and willing each to live strong and beautiful.

What started as a hobby, collecting trees, growing trees from seeds, experimenting propagation, sourcing unusual plants for my garden made me want to share this with like minded gardeners. My commercial import/export background and my artistic inner fibre made me take the leap in order to offer a range of rare, stunning and amazing trees in The United Kingdom.

The beauty of our trees is flaunted through vibrant photography. I hope you have a good browsing experience, and enjoy the website!     xxx Poppin
