Acer palmatum ‘Koto-no-ito’, commonly known as the ‘Harp String’ Japanese maple, is a captivating deciduous shrub or small tree renowned for its delicate, thread-like foliage and graceful form.

The name ‘Koto-no-ito’ translates to ‘Harp Strings’ in Japanese, aptly describing the tree’s slender, elongated leaf lobes that resemble the strings of a traditional harp. This cultivar belongs to the Linearilobum group of Japanese maples, characterized by their narrow, strap-like leaves.

‘Koto-no-ito’ exhibits a slow-growing, upright, and rounded habit, eventually forming a dense, bushy structure. Typically reaching up to 2–3 meters in height and spread over 20–50 years, its fine, twiggy branches contribute to a delicate, airy appearance, enhancing its ornamental value.

The leaves of ‘Koto-no-ito’ are deeply divided into 5 to 7 narrow, strap-like lobes, each tapering to a point. Emerging with crimson tones in spring, the foliage quickly transitions to a bright green during summer. In autumn, the leaves undergo a stunning transformation, turning vibrant shades of orange, red and yellow before shedding, revealing the tree’s bright green bark, which adds winter interest. The red leaft stalks are short, the petioles a re pink, contrasting with the green foliage.

The lobes of this cultivar are slightly broader than those of the usual linearilobum . The lobes are lanceolate, gradually tapering to an elongate, sharp point with margins almost smooth, but irregularly toothed in the broader lobes. The leaf base is almost flat. The tree is hardy.

For optimal growth, plant ‘Koto-no-ito’ in moist but well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It thrives in partial shade, though it can tolerate full sun if the soil remains consistently moist. Protection from strong winds is advisable to prevent leaf scorch. Pruning during late autumn or winter, when the tree is dormant, helps maintain its shape and health.

Incorporating Acer palmatum ‘Koto-no-ito’ into your landscape introduces a touch of elegance and seasonal beauty, enhancing the overall aesthetic and ecological value of your garden.
